One of the great HS distance coaches, Tyson coached for 20 years at Washington state power Mead of Spokane. His Panther squads won 12 state XC titles and produced numerous national individual stars who ran Foot Locker/Kinney and excelled in track in the 4:10/9:10 and better range. The first three years of Nike Cross Nationals (Tyson's last three years at Mead), the team placed 3rd, 4th and 5th. In the early "Harrier" national rankings, Mead had the best composite showing of any boys' team: #3 in '89, #2 in '90, #5 in '91, #1 in '92, #1 in '93, #2 in '96. Tyson went to coach at Gonzaga U in Spokane, after brief stints at Kentucky and Oregon.
